DGL is used to support gastrointestinal health.
Deglycyrrhized licorice root (DGL) has traditionally been used to support gastrointestinal related complaints. The deglycyrrhized form of licorice differs from those often used for adrenal and other health concerns, allowing for higher doses which help heal the gastrointestinal lining. DGL has been found to protect the stomach and gastrointestinal tract through its ability to accelerate the secretion rate of mucus by the gastric mucosa. DGL must be chewed, so when it reaches the stomach it can break up and disperse, to attain gastric healing. Gelatin capsules do not allow DGL to break up and disperse in the stomach.
Along with DGL, this tablet also contains aloe vera, slippery elm bark and marshmallow root, all are considered traditional demulcents which help to soothe the gastrointestinal tract. Demulcent herbs contain mucilage polysaccharides, which swell when mixed with liquid, and provide a slippery soothing property to mucos membranes.
The German Commission E has approved the use of marshmallow root for mild inflammation of the gastric mucosa. Studies show aloe vera is beneficial at healing peptic ulcers in humans, thought to be due in part by its ability to inhibit hydrochloric acid secretion by the parental cells in the stomach.
